RAG DOLLS DDOLLS
I
was inspired to create rag dolls by the girls (first year students in
college) who came to study in Bucharest and lived in dormitories (student
complex). Coming from Transylvania, almost lost in the city, having to
share the room with three other girls, never met before, my new colleague
Mariana, was this smart, ambitious, hard-working student who achieved the
perfect commands of the English language in 11 months. Homesick and
frustrated with her new life, Mariana became depressive. To put a smile on
her face and to show her my true admiration for her efforts, I stuffed a
wool sock with cotton balls, I sewn two buttons for eyes and another for
nose and made a cute cotton tail bunny for their room. All four girls fell
in love with my rag doll; they realized my message and became very good
roommates. This is how I started.
Charley – my second rag
bunny(left). Made in the winter of 1975
– age 21. No pattern. Max was born in 1984 on paper as a hand puppet.
Only the hair, nose and mouth changed with the time. In the picture at the
right he is now almost 20 years old.
